Sun Prairie
The history of Sun Prairie begins with President Van Buren commissioning the state capital of Madison. While the settlers left the area, traveling for days in the rain, they emerged at the edge of a prairie with the sun shining. The words “Sun Prairie” were carved into a tree on the perimeter and Charles Bird returned to the area 24 years later to become the first settler. Sun Prairie’s heritage is well documented at the Historical Museum, offering exhibits, a walking tour and entertaining presentations.

Sun Prairie’s location proves to be a great combination of quiet, suburban life with several cultural and recreational opportunities available to its residents. For tranquil scenery and nature walks, visit the natural wetland of Patrick Marsh. Including 60 acres of water, this natural wetland on the northeast side of the city marks the first wetland mitigation bank site in Wisconsin.

The Sun Prairie Area School District is a public school district comprised of six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school.

If shopping and dining is what you crave, Sun Prairie offers a plethora of activities in its downtown district. With historic facades and city revitalization projects underway, Sun Prairie presents specialty stores and a variety of medical and professional services. If car races are more your speed, visit the Angell Park Speedway that is owned and operated by the Sun Prairie Volunteer Fire Company. Celebrating 60 years, the famed 1/3-mile track has hosted several famous drivers that have tried their skills at Angell. Weekly races are held on Sunday nights in the summer for family fun. Additionally, Angell Park was chosen to house the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame.
